The Rural Industry Liaison Committee meets quarterly to discuss issues affecting farming enterprises within the Wollondilly Shire and the Sydney Basin.

This committee includes Cr Col Mitchell and Cr Judith Hannan.

Wollondilly Council resolved to establish a Rural Industry Liaison Committee at its Ordinary Meeting of 21 June 2004 to facilitate the promotion of Wollondilly Shire Council’s rural agriculture.

The Committee's terms of reference are summarised in the following key points:

  • The review of its Local Environmental Plan and related policies.
  • Educating the community about factors which can enhance or diminish the suitability of land for agricultural production.
  • Investigating the role of agriculture in the tourism market.
  • Incentives to encourage existing and new agricultural producers in the Shire.
  • Economic development issues, specifically agricultures role and contribution towards the economic development of the Shire.
  • Facilitating discussion on issues that affect farmers.
  • Continual update of the Living Together in Rural Wollondilly Information Series http://www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/about/13502/13503.html for new and existing residents of the Shire.
  • Developing strategies to promote the value of agriculture in the Wollondilly Shire.
  • Inform the local community on issues affecting the agricultural community through regular articles in the local media.

The Committee is represented by local members of the poultry, dairy and beef cattle, agri-tourism, horticulture and market garden farming communities, as well as a representative of the NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Cumberland Livestock Health & Pest Authority.

The Committee provides the opportunity for farmers to discuss local issues directly with Council and to develop initiatives and mechanisms to promote the longevity of agriculture in the Shire.
