Transport Options in Wollondilly - Alternatives to the Car

Last modified: September 29, 2009 - 3:58 PM

Wollondilly Shire has a larger proportion of motor vehicle ownership compared to the Sydney region with 66% of Wollondilly households having two or more cars compared to 41% in the Sydney region.

This fact can be attributed to the large area of the Shire and the distances we must travel to access work, school or recreational activities, but what alternatives do we have to driving the car?

Wollondilly Shire is traversed by the main southern railway line and hence a regular train service to the city, southern highlands and beyond, for more details visit www.cityrail.info and why not catch the train next time you have to head into the city!

There are three bus companies which offer services in Wollondilly Shire, including Picton Buslines www.pictonbuslines.com.au , Busways www.busways.com.au and Westbus www.westbus.com.au. Buses are a cheap alternative for travel within and out of Wollondilly Shire.

“Also Wollondilly Shire Council operates a Community Bus which is available for hire by community groups in the Shire; visit our website www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au for more information,” said Mayor, Cr Col Mitchell.

“An alternative to taking the car on a short trip, maybe to school or the local shops, is to walk or cycle,” said Cr Mitchell.

“By doing this you are not only reducing your carbon footprint, but also your waistline, and the fresh air and exercise is also good for your mental health,” said Cr Mitchell.

So next time that you grab your car keys to head out ask yourself if there is an alternative way to travel around Wollondilly?
