Stormwater Management Charge Leading to Improved Waterway HealthLast modified: October 12, 2009 - 12:39 AM
Many residents in Wollondilly have asked how the Stormwater Management Charge, included as part the rates this year, would be spent by Wollondilly Shire Council. The Charge, on residential, commercial and industrial properties, will fund a number of stormwater management programs in the Shire over the next financial year. Some of the activities funded are engineering projects, others are education focussed while others address water quality and water health but all will lead to better quality stormwater entering our creeks and rivers. “The first of the programs to be implemented is a Gross Pollution Trap (GPT), cleaning and maintenance program. Council has engaged a contractor to clean out rubbish and silt from these GPTs and report on their state. The cleaning program will commence soon and is expected to take some time as Council is responsible for more than 150 GPTs throughout the Shire,” said Mayor Cr Col Mitchell. “GPTs are designed to filter litter, sediment and other pollutants from stormwater before it enters our waterways, thus protecting our waterways. The science and engineering behind these types of devices is well advanced and many developments in Wollondilly have put in place GPTs to manage stormwater pollution,” said Cr Mitchell. “Once the developments are complete, nearly all of these devices transfer to Council ownership and responsibility. This would not be an issue except that Council has not had the capacity or resources to adequately manage the GPTs until now, but this has changed thanks to the Stormwater Management Charge,” said Cr Mitchell. The cleaning program involves up to three cleans per GPT in the 2009-2010 financial year and further routine maintenance into the future. Of course it is far better to prevent pollutants entering the stormwater system and residents are reminded that only rainwater should go down the drain and anything else is a form of stormwater pollution. Residents can report stormwater pollution such as sediment leaving building sites, illegal dumping of rubbish/greenwaste and hosing of driveways and footpaths in to the stormwater drains to Council’s Compliance Unit on 4677 1100.
